Full-day Workshops
Engaging with Walking, Drawing, and Ethnography
Full-day workshops combine walking, drawing, and ethnography to explore the relationship between place, perception, and representation. Participants will experience their surroundings in new ways and document their interactions with the environment using creative methods, especially drawing.
These days will be divided into a theory session, an individual work session and a collective session, followed by an end discussion.
Theory session: We discuss the significance of blending walking, drawing, and ethnography methodologies. Afterwards, there will be a Q&A.
Individual session: Participants take a short walk within the workshop space, engaging with their different senses and noting their immediate experiences. This is a way to familiarise themselves with the process.
Group session/collective practice: Participants will begin a structured walk through a pre-selected local route. The facilitator will provide prompts to encourage mindful observation of the environment, focusing on sensory experiences. Participants will document their findings through quick sketches or notes, drawing connections to personal and cultural narratives.
Participants will stop at various checkpoints to share observations and reflections. We end the session inside, where we will collectively focus on translating the initial observations into visual forms. Participants will practice various drawing techniques that emphasise capturing the essence of their walked experiences. The focus will be on spontaneity and expression rather than precision.
End discussion: Participants will present their drawings and share key insights from their experiences. Afterwards, they will engage in a discussion about the connections between walking, visual representation, and ethnographic methods. Constructive feedback will be encouraged, fostering an open dialogue regarding themes and ideas that emerged throughout the day.
